Memorial Day Flags

Story Date: May 29, 2007

On Monday May 28, 2007 Leechburg Lodge 102, Loyal Order of Moose along with the assistance of Chapter 2288, Women of the Moose (jointly known as the Leechburg Moose) handed out 4” x 6” American flags to those attending the annual Leechburg Memorial Day Parade. The Leechburg Moose started doing this a few years ago to show their support of the men and women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. An overwhelming amount of people appreciated us giving out the flags so it was decided to continue handing out flags each year. This year a total of 700 flags were purchased and distributed along the parade route free of charge. Again many were appreciative and those who attend the parade each year have come to expect the Leechburg Moose to be handing them out.

The Leechburg Moose strives to be active in the community by offering activities such as the Community Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Party with Haunted House, Children’s Christmas Party, and a Christmas Party for the residents of the Friendship Apartments. These activities are at no charge to those participating as they are funded by the support of their members. In addition to their annual community activities the Leechburg Moose also hosts Community Blood Drives throughout the year and offers support to the Leechburg Volunteer Fire Company by providing beverages during incidents of duration as well as sponsoring fundraisers ever now and again. Throughout the year they also offer their assistance to families and people in need. Whether this involves raising funds or just helping out in some way, they strive to do what they can to better the community.

The Leechburg Moose is also a proud supporter of Mooseheart, also known as the "Child City and School". This is a complete community for young people in need, situated on 1,000 acres of prime Illinois farmland in the Fox River Valley, about 38 miles west of Chicago. Mooseheart has its own homes, schools, cathedral, farm, health center, stores, post office and utilities. To learn more about Mooseheart visit their website at www.mooseheart.org.

The Leechburg Moose also tries to provide a variety of activities for its membership as well as their family. Activities such as dance/karaoke nights, open jukebox nights, dart and pool leagues, dart tournaments (held monthly), bar bingo (weekly during the fall and winter) are conducted throughout the year. During the summer months they also host cookouts at the lodge open to the entire family. The Leechburg Moose prides itself on being a family oriented facility and tries to find various ways to include the children in some of the activities it offers. The lodge houses a children’s activity room which features a video game system and games, cable TV, movies, and variety of toys to occupy the child’s time. They also offer Spin Art as well as a variety of crafts which the children can do with their parents. In a community where activities for the children are limited, members are able to offer their children something to do without a worry of cost as most is offered free of charge.
