Leechburg Elks Hold Flag Day Event

Leechburg Elks Lodge 377 decorated in red,white and blue, came alive with the sounds of marches and patriotic tunes performed by the Kiski-Valley Community Band on Thursday, June 14th. . Each year, Elks Lodges all over the nation observe Flag Day which was started by the Elks in 1907. The Leechburg Lodge opened its program with the Kiski Valley Community Band, led by Pat Marco. An Honor Guard made up of members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 330 of Leechburg, and the American Legion Post 266 of Leechburg, advanced the flag for this event. The Elks Flag Day Ritual was performed by Acting Exalted Ruler Dale Frederick and the Lodge Officers. Dale Frederick PER, accompanied by the band, presented his stirring rendition of “Ragged Old Flag”. The Lodge then welcomed a very special guest speaker, Chief Master Sargeant Shawn M. Haugh who spoke of his recent deployment to Iraq. Chief Haugh was born 1950 Pittsburgh, Pa., one of seven children. He moved to Leechburg 1957 and
attended school in the Kiski Area School District. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in July 1969 and was honorably discharged from the Corps in 1971. He was hired as a carpenter for Allegheny Ludlum Steel 1972. In 1987, he joined the Pennsylvania Air National Guard (PA ANG). He has been deployed four different times to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq since 911. He is the father of three children and grandfather of three. He spoke of the very positive effects of the American presence in Iraq. Following his presentation, he received a standing ovation from the crowd attending the event. After the program, refreshments were served. Lodge 377 thanks all who attended and participated to make this event honoring our flag a great success.
