Leechburg Elks Continues to Donate Ballroom for Blood Drives

Written By: Rosemarie Shea Lodge Secretary, Leechburg Elks
Story Date: November 01, 2009

Five times each year, Leechburg Elks Lodge 377 donates the use of its Ballroom to the American Red Cross for their Blood Drive. Personnel from the Red Cross are assisted by Elks and volunteers from the Leechburg area. The process of giving a blood donation takes about an hour to an hour and a half from when the donor arrives until they are ready to leave. Potential blood donors are screened for eligibility through a blood test for iron content, a blood pressure and pulse check, and a confidential interview. An RN or professional Phlebotomist then obtains the blood donation. Following the donation of blood, the donor is given a snack of juice, sandwiches, and cookies before leaving. The blood is transported to a Central Blood Bank where it is then distributed to hospitals who are in need of the blood. The next blood drive is scheduled for January 28,2010. Please mark this on your calendar and plan on donating.
