Local District Judge Wins Elks Youth Volunteer Award

Leechburg Elks Lodge Exalted Ruler William Carroll recently
presented the Benevvolent and Protective Order of Elks Grand Lodge Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award to Magisterial District Judge Michael Gerheim. This award is presented to one (1) Elk from each of the eight (8) Grand Lodge Areas who has been actively involved with the youth of their community. This person MUST be an Elk and should
be active not only with the Elks Youth Activity programs but, also, with other programs not necessarily connected with the Elks such as Boys and Girls Clubs, the YMCA or any other type of community youth program. Gerheim, who was born in Gilpin Township, PA and has lived in the area for much of his life first began his tradition of service by
serving his country in the US Army and Air Force Reserves, and later as a police officer in six (6) local police departments. He supported the inception of the Youth Commission for first offence juvenile offenders in Armstrong County in1994, and he has implemented community-improvement work programs to help low income offenders
pay off fines for minor offenses. He is a Partner in Prevention for the Armstrong Country Community Awareness Day to increase awareness of and protection from child abuse, domestic violence, elder abuse, sexual assault, and the abuse of alcohol, tobacco and drugs in local schools and senior and other community centers. He is the Chairman of River Valley District of the Moraine Trail Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and volunteers at Scouts camping activities and (appropriately) judges the Pine Wood Derby. In 1995, Mike started a Boy Scouts Legal Explorer Crew, where the young people had lectures and access to lawyers and law enforcement people who discussed various aspects of the law. For his efforts, he received a 2005 Moraine Trails
Council Service of Excellence award. Mike has been a member of The Leechburg Rotary Club since 1990, and served as President in 1994-95. He is the chairperson for the Annual Rotary Golf Classic, and participates in the many Rotary humanitarian activities with other community professional leaders. In 1992, he was selected Rotarian of the Year, and in 2006, he was inducted into the Leehburg Hall of Fame.
Mike served on the Steering Committee for the Leechburg Area School District in 1992-94, and he is also a member of the Leechburg Elks Lodge 377 where he won the Citizenship Award for 2008 - 2009. He serves on the Drug Awareness Committee at Leechburg Lodge 377 and served as a judge of the Drug Awareness Poster Contest. last year. He presently
chairs the Youth Activity Committee of the Lodge.
